Reed in Resonance
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Amber Tone
In the orchestra, the bassoon rarely claims the spotlight, yet its voice anchors the ensemble with warmth and wit. Here, caught in a pool of stage light, the instrument’s burnished wood seems almost luminous against the surrounding darkness — a vertical line of amber rising through the orchestral texture.
The musician’s expression is one of inward concentration. There is no theatrical flourish, only the quiet discipline of breath and embouchure. The curved silver bocal arcs gently toward the reed — a delicate bridge between human breath and crafted timber. In that small curve lies the transformation of air into resonance.
I am drawn to such moments: not the crescendo or the bow raised in triumph, but the steadiness between notes — the craft behind the sound. In ensemble playing, the drama often lives beneath the melody. This image honours that quieter register.
