Hermanus as a Stage - Fields and Footlights
Under winter grass and summer sand,
beneath floodlight and footlight,
we gather —
to compete, to perform,
to belong.
This series brings together moments from local sport and performance — bodyboarding and polo, concert halls and community stages. The photographs are not about results or headlines, but about the shared human experience that unfolds within these spaces.
On the field and under the footlights, we reveal ourselves.
In sport, the body becomes expression — tension, balance, release. A polo pony suspended mid-stride or lifeguards poised between vigilance and ease. These are gestures of commitment, shaped by discipline and instinct.
In music and theatre, as in life, the body becomes instrumental — breath, gesture, presence. A conductor’s hand held in charged suspension. A singer leaning into a phrase. A musician waiting for the precise moment to enter. Performance is not only sound or spectacle; it is concentration made visible.
Though these settings appear different — grass and road, shoreline and stage — they are united by anticipation, impact and at times applause. Both are arenas of trust: trust in training, in partnership, in the fragile timing between intention and action. In each, something fleeting becomes briefly luminous.
Some images isolate the instant of action; others linger in the quieter intervals — the waiting, the preparation, the watchfulness between movements. Together, they form a study of shared energy. Not spectacle for its own sake, but presence.
In Hermanus and beyond, these moments shape the rhythm of local life: the weekend polo match at Botrivier, the winter concert season, the applause that binds performer and audience, player and spectator. Fields and footlights may seem separate worlds.
In truth, they are stages of the same human story — places where effort meets attention, where light falls on commitment, and where community gathers to witness something larger than the individual.
