Hermanus - A Coastal Narrative

Statement of Intent

This submission forms part of an ongoing body of work exploring coastal life in and around Hermanus on the Overstrand coast of South Africa. The project is rooted in sustained observation and reflects my long-term engagement with the place where I live and photograph. My intention is to present a coherent visual narrative that examines the everyday relationship between people, sea, and landscape, moving beyond familiar coastal spectacle to focus on lived experience.

Hermanus occupies a distinctive position between mountain and ocean. While widely recognised as a destination, it is less often considered as a working and residential environment shaped by routine, responsibility, and quiet attentiveness to the sea. My photography seeks to address this by documenting moments of work, rest, preparation, and transition along the shoreline. The sea is treated not as a backdrop but as an active presence influencing behaviour, timing, and interaction.

The images are made through repeated visits to familiar locations, allowing patterns and gestures to emerge over time. I am drawn to moments between action rather than moments of peak drama: lifeguards resting between duties, surfers watching conditions before entering the water, families learning the rhythms of tide and temperature. These pauses allow the work to move from description toward interpretation.

Photographically, the work sits between documentary practice and personal expression. Careful composition, natural light, and restrained use of colour are central to my approach, supporting clarity and visual coherence across the panel. Sequencing plays a key role in shaping the narrative, encouraging a slow, considered reading of the images and reinforcing a strong sense of place.

Hopefully this submission demonstrates my ability to sustain a unified theme across a body of work and reflects my developing photographic identity. Through this series, I aim to present an honest and reflective portrayal of coastal life, grounded in personal experience and attentive to the relationship between people and the environment they inhabit.
