Watching the Day Unfold Together

Watching the Day Unfold Together

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

Photographed at Onrus Beach during a community volleyball event, this image captures a quieter moment on the margins of activity. While the game unfolds nearby, a parent and child sit together on the sand, sharing the rhythms of the afternoon — watching, talking, waiting.

I was drawn less to the sport itself than to the way coastal events become informal classrooms, where attention, values, and a sense of place are passed on without instruction. The sea forms a constant backdrop, reminding us that along this shoreline, human gatherings are always secondary to the larger rhythm of waves and weather.

The game breaks for breath,

waves take their turn.

A child listens,

the sea keeps time.

No whistle calls this lesson —

only sand, salt,

and the quiet passing

of an afternoon shared.
