Where the Line Meets The Sea

Where the Line Meets The Sea

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

This photograph was taken along the rocky shoreline near Onrus, where beach fishing remains a quiet but enduring coastal ritual. I was drawn to the contrast between the raw energy of the breaking wave and the stillness of the fisherman, standing patiently at the water’s edge.

Beach fishing is often misunderstood as an act of pursuit, but for many it is about rhythm rather than reward — the pleasure of casting, waiting, and reading the sea. In this moment, the fisherman becomes a measure of scale, reminding us of our smallness against the ocean, yet also of our deep contentment in engaging with it.

The image documents everyday encounters where joy is found not in control of nature, but in attentive coexistence with it.

He casts not for the catch alone,

but for the pause between the waves —

where foam unravels,

and time loosens its grip.

Here, joy is the tug of salt air,

the hush before the break,

and knowing the sea owes nothing —

yet gives the moment freely.
