The Surfer Waits

The Surfer Waits

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

Caught in the tension between surge and stillness, a lone bodyboarder stands poised on the Onrus rocks, facing the full force of the sea.

This image captures the quiet courage and ritual of readiness that defines surf culture — not in the wave itself, but in the moments just before.

Here, the athlete is both spectator and participant, holding a silence charged with movement yet to come.

He waits, where ocean breath meets stone,

feet firm on barnacled bone —

a hunter stilled before the chase.

The wave explodes, a curtain bright,

but he stands watching, back to light,

patient in the roar and spray.

Not every surfer rides to run —

some watch, some read the rhythm spun,

and move when sea and soul align.
