On Watch
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
In a moment of quiet resolve, a lifeguard adjusts his cap and gaze before the shift begins. The open doorway behind him speaks of readiness, while the structure’s stark geometry contrasts with his vivid uniform—red, yellow, and alert.
This image captures the calm before vigilance becomes action, the pause before protection becomes performance.
He stands in colour, bold and still,
before the sea has claimed the day —
a sentinel with whistle’s will,
framed by cement, by sun, by bay.
Behind, the first aid door swings wide,
yet all his gaze is seaward cast —
the tide will rise, the swimmers glide,
but he will guard until the last.
