Red Watch

Red Watch

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

In Hermanus, vigilance is not theatrical. It is patient, sunlit, and woven into the rhythm of the shoreline. These three lifeguards sit poised between movement and stillness, their red uniforms igniting against the rugged rock face, as unmistakable as signal flags against the sea.

There is a quiet choreography at play: one resting back, one gesturing mid-conversation, one standing with a stance that is almost sculptural. The yellow rescue cans lie ready, understated but present — tools of responsibility in a landscape of leisure. The scene carries an easy camaraderie, yet beneath it lies alertness. Their ease is earned, not casual.

This image is less about drama than about readiness — about the human line of defence that exists quietly along our beaches. In the late light, against stone and sand, they become part of the coastline itself: guardians not only of swimmers, but of the shared space between land and sea.
