Arches of Patterned Light — Bukhara
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Within the historic heart of Bukhara, an arcade of pointed arches leads the eye inward through a sequence of geometric forms and filtered illumination. Blue tile work, intricate brick patterns, and carved surfaces create a visual rhythm that guides both movement and light.
Each arch frames the next, compressing and releasing space in measured intervals, until a distant doorway glows at the far end like a small sun. The cool blues of the tiled façade contrast with the warm tones of sunlit brick within, turning the passage into a dialogue between shadow and radiance.
A lone figure in the distance reinforces the human scale of this monumental geometry — a reminder that these spaces were not only sacred or ceremonial, but also lived in, walked through, and experienced daily. The image captures architecture as both structure and atmosphere, where light is shaped into form.
