Arcades of Light — Balboa Park San Diego
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Beneath the grand arcades of Balboa Park in San Diego, Spanish Revival architecture shapes both space and light into something almost theatrical. Repeating arches draw the eye forward in a rhythmic procession, while warm lanterns glow against cool stone, creating a corridor that feels suspended between shade and sun.
A solitary figure walks through this architectural tunnel, becoming part of the scale and story of the place — a quiet human presence within a design meant for community, passage, and gathering. Beyond the final arch, daylight spills in, turning the far end into a luminous threshold between interior calm and the living city beyond.
This image explores how cities do not only shine in skylines or neon, but in the softer drama of passageways, courtyards, and communal spaces where light is filtered, framed, and guided by human design.
