Curtain Up on the Street — Dominion Theatre
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Outside the historic Dominion Theatre in London’s West End, the boundary between performance and daily life dissolves. Beneath the bold signage for Sister Act, pedestrians cross the pavement in their own unscripted choreography, each person absorbed in their own scene while the theatre façade looms like a permanent stage set behind them.
The architecture, with its Art Deco lines and carved stone, anchors the image in theatrical tradition, while the crowd provides motion and unpredictability. A cyclist glides past, couples talk, individuals hurry — ordinary gestures unfolding beneath a promise of spectacle inside.
The photograph captures a quiet paradox of cities: before the curtain rises indoors, the real drama is already playing out in the street.
