Kalon Ensemble, Bukhara
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
This photo shows the magnificence of the architecture in Bukhara Uzbekistan. Here the setting sun illuminates the mosque, the minaret and the madrassah (Islamic school) that forms the Po-i-Kalyan (Kalon) Ensemble.
Bukhara is an oasis on the Zerafshan river delta in central Uzbekistan, lying on a crossroads of two of the Great Silk Road routes that stretched across Central Asia, and was a vital stopping point for merchants on the edge of the Kyzyl Kum (Red Sand) and Kara Kum (Black Sand) deserts.
