The Golden Journey’s End — Registan, Samarkand

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

In the vast ceremonial square of the Registan in Samarkand, three great madrasahs rise in patterned tile and turquoise dome, forming one of the most iconic architectural ensembles of the Silk Road world. Their monumental iwans and minarets frame a space designed not only for learning, but for civic life, ceremony, and exchange.

Sunlight falls cleanly across the square, revealing the intricate geometry of mosaic and brick. The blue domes echo the sky above, while human figures move quietly below, their scale reminding us that these grand structures were always meant to be lived among, studied within, and walked through.

For me, the Registan is more than architecture. It is a destination long imagined — a place where history, literature, and personal memory meet. The square becomes both a physical and a symbolic arrival point: the end of a journey once made only in the mind.
