Boats Against Brick — Brighton Seafront
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Along the historic arches of the Brighton waterfront, old brick vaults meet the sea’s open horizon. Upturned fishing boats lean against curved doorways, their blue hulls echoing the colour of sky and water, while small signs, bunting, and handmade displays hint at craft, performance, and seaside tradition.
These Victorian arches, once working storage for the fishing community, now house studios, workshops, and small cultural spaces — a quiet evolution of purpose without loss of character. The scene feels unhurried, the paving stones still damp, the air carrying that soft coastal light which flattens shadow and lifts colour.
This is a city’s edge rather than its centre: a place where urban structure yields gently to the sea, and where history rests lightly against present-day creativity.
