Painted Passage — Old Town, Tallinn
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Along a narrow cobbled street in the medieval heart of Tallinn, pastel façades and steep red roofs lean toward one another under a textured northern sky. Rendered in a painterly, impasto style, the scene recalls the long artistic tradition of interpreting historic European cities through colour, atmosphere, and softened edges rather than sharp detail.
Figures move along the street as gentle blurs, their presence secondary to the rhythm of architecture. Windows glow faintly, stone reflects sky tones, and the buildings themselves become the true subjects — centuries of history layered in plaster, timber, and brick. The oil-like surface turns stone into pigment and sky into brushstroke.
This image reflects Tallinn not just as a preserved medieval city, but as a living canvas where light, colour, and time merge into a single visual impression.
