Colour, Faith, and Sky — Addis Ababa

Colour, Faith, and Sky — Addis Ababa

Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS

Beneath a high Ethiopian sky in Addis Ababa, a vividly painted church stands in radiant blues, yellows, and greens — colours that feel inseparable from the light of the highlands. The building’s octagonal form and surrounding veranda reflect the distinctive architectural traditions of Ethiopian Orthodox worship, where structure, colour, and symbolism intertwine.

In the foreground, a lone figure kneels at a small roadside prayer shelter, separated from the main church yet spiritually connected. The moment is quiet, personal, and deeply human — faith expressed not in grand gesture, but in stillness.

Sunlight washes the scene with clarity, flattening shadow and intensifying colour so that architecture, devotion, and landscape merge into one luminous expression of place.
