Fire in His Hands
Artist’s Statement: D J Wilson, LRPS
Captured in the fading light of dusk, this image shifts the focus from display to concentration — a fire performer caught in a moment of alert stillness as flame blooms just beyond his grasp. His gaze follows the fire, not the audience, revealing the quiet vigilance behind the spectacle.
The photograph explores the unseen side of performance: the split second of assessment, control, and respect for the element at hand. Fire here is not ornament, but presence — unpredictable, alive — and the performer’s composure becomes the true subject.
Using only available light, the image preserves the natural glow of flame against the deepening evening tones, allowing heat, smoke, and expression to shape the atmosphere. It is a portrait of focus within danger, where artistry is measured not just in movement, but in awareness.
Between Flame and Breath
At the edge of evening’s fading gold,
where daylight loosens its careful hold,
she lifts the fire like living light,
a bloom of heat against the night.
Her smile is calm, her hands are sure —
where danger dances, she is pure.
But not all fire is spun in grace;
sometimes it burns in watchful space.
He stands where shadow meets the spark,
eyes tracing embers through the dark,
a silent pact with heat and air —
art is skill, and skill is care.
Between the glow and measured breath,
between bright beauty, risk, and death,
they shape the flame, yet are not free —
for fire demands humility.
And in that balance, fierce and still,
the light obeys the human will.
